Boradruma, Castlebar

kathleen_mchaleKathleen McHale was born September 16 1940, the second of three daughters to Molly (nee O'Connor) and Paddy Ketterick of Spencer Street, Castlebar.
She died unexpectedly on January 10, 2010 whilst writing an email to The Irish Times. She died as she lived; a consummate communicator.
As a daughter of a publican and Irish Civil War veteran, Kathleen was a born speaker, sociologist and political observer.
Whilst her activism was reserved for local initiatives, underscoring her determination to continuously build local confidence, which in turn would feed national sustenance, she allocated her charitable work nationally.

Moneen, Castlebar

annie_bourkeThere are few who are fortunate to grow old with grace and dignity and our mother, Anne (Annie) Bourke, was one of them.
Annie Bourke (nee Hughes) was a very unique individual in many ways. She was 76 years and passed from this life on January 25 at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar.
Annie was the second eldest daughter of Thomas and Mariah Hughes of Drumasloyan, Manulla, Castlebar.
She was born in Doomnanoomia in the early 30s and she attended both Turlough and Manulla National Schools in the early 40s.
On finishing school she worked for a period with Deviny's Wholesale Distributors, Breaffy, and after finishing there, worked for a short period at Mayo General Hospital.

Pound Road, Castlebar

flor_healyI felt a personal loss when I learned of the death of Flor Healy. I am sure that was the feeling of all her friends, and she had many friends.
She was a most popular lady and I use the word lady in its finest meaning. She moved like a lady, she behaved like a lady and possessed the fine features of a lady.
I cannot recall clearly when I first met her but it goes back to the great moments of the song contest when Castlebar punched way above its weight and the name of the town was known all over the British Isles.

Knockthomas Drive, Castlebar

greg_earlsThe death of Mr. Greg Earls, 1 Knockthomas Drive, Castlebar, which took place on January 31 last, is widely regretted.
Greg was born on the January 21, 1951, and was son of the late Harold and Maureen Earls, Rathbawn Road, Castlebar.
He left school when he 16 years old and spent 42 years working for the P&T, Telecom Eireann and Eircom. He retired last June.
Soccer was a huge part of Greg's life and spanned over three decades. This was his true passion and where he was happiest.
Some of his most memorable days were playing in the town league for Knockthomas, playing indoor soccer with Telecom, being involved with Donal Benson for the Mayo Oscar Traynor side and managing the Mayo Under 18 side that reached the FAI Youth Cup final in the 1988/89 season.
