snow ice lakeJanuary is a grey month. The snow has passed, the ice is melting, the sky is low and heavy and grey and there is little life stirring. But already the snowdrops are pushing up through the half sleepy earth and when the snowdrops appear all is beginning to look well again.

bertie ahernWe have said goodbye to the year. It died to the ringing of bells and the new year was welcomed with the sound of the same bells. They tolled over Dublin. The advent of a new year always gives hope. It is a rebirth. This year the first of January was not welcomed with the usual joy. The banks and the government have sapped our joy and little of the poetic remains in our lives.

Softly it fell during an early night on the Mall, the great bare trees, on the church on the hill, and the church in the hollow, and all the roofs of the town. It came softly and it built up quietly like soft feathers. Soon the country was immaculate in white.

I walked to the temple complex at Luxor and gazed at the great pillars, which had held temple lintels.
