ICHAEL Collins marched in through the gates of Dublin Castle on January 16, 1922. The English army marched out.
There are two different stories concerning this event. In one, a fussy official, perhaps the Viceroy, Lord FitzAlan, is supposed to have said, 'You're seven minutes late, Mr. Collins'. Collins replied, 'We've been waiting 700 years, you can have the seven minutes'.
In the other, James McMahon, the helpful Under Secretary, said, 'We're glad to see you Mr. Collins', to which in a west Cork accent he responded, 'Ye are like hell boy'!
