The Castlebar Parish Magazine is always a good read and this, the 40th anniversary of the magazine, is no exception.
While the publication of the magazine is eagerly awaited by those at home, it is the many people abroad who really look forward to getting the magazine, which remains a vital link between home and abroad.
The curse of emigration is upon us once more and many people will not be returning home for Christmas this year.

The role of the magazine is even more important than ever as a link between those who have loved ones in various parts of the world, and the fact that the publication has continued to appear on an annual basis is a tribute to those involved in it, especially the editor, Joe Redmond, whose painstaking care for the publication can be seen in every page.

For Joe, and indeed the many contributors, it is a labour of love and while we live in an era of skype, the internet, text messaging and the blinding speed of technology, it is heartening to see that the printed word is still held very dear to those who feel the magazine contributes enormously to the community spirit and reflects the identity of an ever expanding county town.

At a time when recession is biting and many people are under pressure, a sense of community spirit was never more important and publications such as the parish magazine go some distance in promoting that spirit in the town and parish
Every picture does indeed say a thousand words and there are some superb photos from the archives in this year's publication, a sample of which I have included in this week's newspaper column.

The births, deaths, marriages and lives of those are recorded and saved for posterity in what is an important contribution to the social, historical and sporting life of Castlebar and its environs.
As they say, everyone should have one – and every town should seek to record their own history for posterity. Indeed, many do. Castlebar can be truly proud of their production 40 years on.

I know the editor and the previous one too, not a bad bunch of guys really! I grew up looking at this every Christmas in Castlebar and couldn't see the point of it. Now I am the other side of the world i really look forward to it!
