islandI will be thrown into the deep end on my first day in my new parish of Cárna. Not literally, I hope, as I will be sailing to an uninhabited offshore island, Oileán Mhic Dara (St. Mac Dara's island) with a thousand or more people who will celebrate the feast of their patron, Saint Mac Dara with a Mass, followed by music, dancing, currach and Galway hooker races.

The big fair day held on that date in Tourmakeady, Aonach an tSleibhe, the hill fair, was a most important day in the sheep farmer's calendar, though it was not confined to sheep, but to all manner of other animals too, from bonhams to cattle.

The Leaving is probably the toughest educational test young people have to endure in their lives, no matter what courses or careers they choose to follow afterwards. Well done to all concerned.
