ballballClaremorris qualified for the county Under 21 A championship semi-final following their massive win over Knockmore in the quarterfinal.
As the scoreline suggests, this was very much a one-sided encounter with the outcome long decided before the final whistle.
On the evidence of this display, Claremorris will be no pushover and their semi-final opponents, Ballintubber, will have to be at their best to stop them.
The writing was on the wall as early as the opening minute after Alan Healy waltzed through the Knockmore defence before scoring a great goal. And with just over seven minutes gone on the clock, Claremorris had doubled their lead following points from Kevin Walsh (two) and James Shaughnessy.
Knockmore's cause was not helped when midfielder James Ruddy had to leave the field after picking up an injury. When Mark Sullivan netted for Claremorris on 14 minutes the north Mayo side were left with a real uphill battle.
A third goal for Claremorris soon arrived when a long delivery into the Knockmore goal area deceived the Knockmore 'keeper, Tomas Hanley and ended in the net. David Commons and Healy followed with a point each to more or less kill the contest even before the half-time whistle sounded.
It was 27 minutes into the game before Knockmore registered their first score, a point from Keith Ruttledge. However, just before the break they were dealt another blow when Claremorris scored a fourth goal. It was scored from the penalty spot by Liam Feeley after John Hutton was fouled.
Colm Donnellan did manage a point for Knockmore but they still found themselves 16 points behind, 4-6 to 0-2, at the interval.
Any thoughts of any sort of a Knockmore comeback were soon quashed when Kevin Walsh scored a fifth goal for Claremorris on the resumption.
Although Knockmore never threw in the towel they were just not able to stop Claremorris. However, they managed to score a goal 12 minutes from time when Keith Ruttledge burst through to find the back of the net. But four minutes later this score was cancelled out at the other end of the field when John Hutton found the back of the Knockmore net.
A final point from a free by Walsh ended the scoring, which left Claremorris the comfortable winners. But while they will feel they are a match for any of the sides left in the championship they will have a lot tougher games than this if they hope to clinch the title.
