Conor O'Malley accepts his award from Conor Hawkins of Shamrock Rovers

Westports omalley named shamrock rovers b player of the year

A LATECOMER to the squad, Conor O’Malley only joined the Shamrock Rovers B first team squad two weeks before their first game of the season against Cobh Ramblers, writes Nigel Naughton.

O’Malley came with a good reputation; he began his career with Westport United and played in the League of Ireland with both Salthill Devon and Mervue United. He was also capped three times for Ireland during his youth years.

The goalkeeper did miss two months of the season with an injury, but on his return he produced a string of impressive performances between the sticks for Rovers.

O’Malley played in 15 of the 28 games this season, most of these appearances coming in the second half of the season, and he provided cover on the bench for the first team too on several occasions.

Conor O’Malley was chosen by his fellow squad members and team management as the Shamrock Rovers’ First Division Player of the Year. That in itself is one of the greatest honours a player can have bestowed upon him by his peers.

Having turned 20 years of age only last August, he is very young in goalkeeping terms and is only starting out on what no doubt will be a very successful and rewarding career.
