Inaugural Mayo Footgolf Cup to attract 32 competing teams

THE Mayo Football League have partnered with Pieta House, Footgolf Mayo in Westport and Unit 7 Menswear in Castlebar to announce the inaugural Mayo Footgolf Cup, which will take place in seven days' time (June 19) at Footgolf Mayo, Westport.

The competition is open to all Mayo clubs and each club may enter more than one team. There are four players per team and there are both team and individual prizes. The cut-off time for entry is 5 p.m. on Thursday (June 16).

Footgolf is a combination of soccer and golf. The rules of footgolf are similar to the rules of golf and the game is played on a golf course, with sand bunkers and various hazards in place. The first shot has to be played from the tee, and to reach the hole, bunkers, trees and hills have to be crossed or avoided. As with golf, the player who completes the 18 holes with the fewest shots wins.

Ireland's premier footgolf course is located close to Westport at the Westport Country Lodge Hotel, and the Mayo Football League is delighted to have partnered with them and Unit 7 Menswear to organise this novel and exciting competition. To add to the occasion, all teams are being asked to compete in their club colours. A presentation function will follow in the Westport Country Lodge Hotel.

The date - Sunday, June 19 - has been scheduled to coincide with the break that the Mayo League are taking during Euro 2016. Clubs from the other leagues in Connaught are also invited. Thirty-two teams will compete and places are available on a first come, first served basis.

Padraig McHale, chairperson of the Mayo Football League, said that the league is delighted to again be associated with Pieta House, who are doing such good work for young people throughout Mayo and beyond.

“It's the second collaboration between the league and Pieta House, who were recently announced as our partners for the Under 19 League,” Padraig explained. He also thanked Footgolf Mayo for making the facility available to the Mayo Football League and to the sponsor of the tournament, Unit 7 Menswear, Castlebar.

Sean Molloy, communications director with the league, said that he hoped it would become an annual event and that as well as being competitive, the emphasis will be on having a fun day out and giving players from all over the county a chance to meet up and enjoy the occasion.
