Colm Moran helped create Mayo and Westport GAA history

THE CONNAUGHT TELEGRAPH YOUNG SPORTSTARS OF THE YEAR NO. 2:

WESTPORT achieved what no Mayo club side had managed to do since the inception of the intermediate football championship - win an All-Ireland title.

For the west Mayo club it was a long hard road which saw the character of the side tested, first in Connaught and then in the All-Ireland semi-final where they came up against strong favourites, Kenmare, the Kerry and Munster champions.

It took extra-time for Westport to dig it out and book their place in the final against Leinster and Meath champions, St. Colmcilles.

Colm Moran impressed so much in both the semi-final and final that he has earned a call up to the Mayo Under 21 team.

But it was for his contribution towards Westport winning the All-Ireland intermediate title that he is named as the award winner for February.

The awards wil be presented at a gala function in Breaffy House Resort on Friday night, February 16.
