Mayo volleyball player debuts for Ireland

MAYO volleyball player Mikal O'Boyle has successfully made it onto the Ireland national volleyball team.

The Knock-based player debuted against Northern Ireland in The Watershed Arena in Kilkenny and hit the ground running as her side defeated their northern neighbours 3-0.

They followed up with a friendly against the Northern Ireland League All Stars where they again tasted victory with another impeccable 3-0 victory.

Mikal played the entirety of both matches where she put in a great defensive and attacking display as she was routinely switched from the middle position to the reverse hitting position at different junctures of the matches.

She said afterwards: “It is a great honour to represent Ireland in volleyball. I will grasp the opportunity with both hand.”

And there could be more good news on the horizon for local volleyball. At underage level, Mayo Volleyball Club has a number of girls who have trials coming up with the Under 17s and Under 19s, so watch this space.
