hurley stickHurling: Tooreen proved too strong for Castlebar Mitchels in the county Under 16 A hurling championship final played in McHale Park, Castlebar, last Saturday. Their nine-point win didn't look likely at the interval as they just held a one-point lead after playing with whatever wind advantage there was. However, Tooreen upped a gear after the break and proved too strong for a gallant Castlebar side. The Castlebar boys lost nothing in defeat as they battled very hard throughout but in the end they were unable to stay with their stronger opponents. Both sides settled early and were still level after 12 minutes on two points each. Daniel Cunnane and David Kenny for Tooreen and Kevin Keena (two) for Mitchels were the scorers.
But Tooreen then hit a purple patch, scoring two goals and a point in a four-minute spell. Joseph Henry was first to find the net and Patrick Morris, after scoring a point in the 15th minute, followed with a goal two minutes later.
But Castlebar fought back and on 20 minutes Conor Mylett hit a 20-metre free to the back of the net, followed with a point 60 seconds later to leave just a goal between the sides.
Although Fergal Boland extended Tooreen's lead with a fine point from play it was Castlebar who had the last say in the half when Dara Singh delightfully sent the sliotar to the back of the net to leave them trailing by one at the break, 2-4 to 2-3.
The second half was a different story as Tooreen took complete control, adding two more goals and three points to their tally, while Castlebar added just a point to their score.
With less than a minute gone after the resumption Castlebar were back on level terms after a fine point from a Mylett free. However, that was as close as they came to Tooreen.
It was Henry and Morris who again struck for the goals that put an end to the Castlebar challenge. Points from Fergal Boland, Henry and David Kenny left Tooreen the deserving winners.
