racquetball_champsracquetball_champsCASTLEBAR racquetball stars, Katie Kenny and Majella Haverty, are European doubles champions following the 16th European Championships in Bad Tolz, Germany.

They defeated Germany’s Lara Ludwig and Yvonne Mesecke in a dramatic final to gain the prestigious title.

Leading to the final they defeated another German team of Sylvia Moy and Simone Jorzcik by two games to one in the semi-final but their toughest task was in the decider against the German number one pair.

Losing the first game by 15 points to 13, Majella and Katie went nine points to two down in the second but recovered to take the game 15–13.

In the tiebreaker to 11 points, it was point for point to seven-all. But some great shots from the Castlebar duo closed out the match on the score line of 11 points to seven.

The triumph by the Castlebar girls was not the only Irish triumph as Donna Ryder (Newport) and Majella Haverty (Castlebar) won bronze medals in their respective single events.
