Anti-racism vigil held in Mayo

United Against Racism Mayo held a vigil yesterday at the Mall in Castlebar to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

The event was originally cancelled due to concerns that social distancing may have been compromised by a large turnout.

But it went ahead with a smaller attendance observing the two-metre restriction.

A number of speeches were made in support of the Black Lives Matter movement following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Among those to address the event was 19-year old Ayo Anjorin (pictured) from Castlebar.

Ayo is a third-year medicine and is home in Mayo due to the Covdi-19 pandemic.

Kany Kazadi and Elton Kimpwene, Castlebar, also addressed the vigil.

United Against Racism Mayo is committed to campaigning against racism and discrimination in the community and wants the direct provision system abolished.
