Rural west of Ireland pubs 'should not be compared to Temple Bar'

Mayo TD Alan Dillon has described the decision not to allow pubs to open as “concerning” for publicans who are already on their knees.

The Fine Gael deputy said “I understand public safety is paramount and we must do everything in our power to safeguard public health but a concrete plan is needed for publicans in order for them to reopen safely, there’s 50,000 jobs nationally on the line and people need clarity.”

An Tánaiste Leo Varadkar outlined in the Convention Centre on Thursday that pubs, nightclubs and other venues will open “no sooner than August 10.”

He stressed that it depends “on how the virus behaves” with the numbers of infection cases on the rise.

Deputy Dillon said that while pubs and bars, which are currently operating while serving food, can remain open, the same rules should apply for premises that serve alcohol.

“We have seen a large increase in the number of house parties and social gathering, which bring a huge threat to increased levels of Covid-19 community transfer.

“A rural pub in the west of Ireland should not be compared with pubs in the Temple Bar area, rural pubs are a lifeline to many locals in their community and provide much more than just a social drink.

“There are a place to meet neighbours and friends and keep in contact during these challenging times. We must trust publicans to be competent and uphold the law within their premises, and I’m sure the majority will,” added Deputy Dillon.
