Mayo sports club suffers pitch 'invasion'

A MAYO sports club has been the subject of a pitch 'invasion'.

Westport United's training pitch at the Point has been damaged, with multiple tyre tracks, after someone drove onto it.

In a social media post this afternoon the club explained: “Words cannot describe what happened out the Point.

“The club has put a lot of work on the pitch to ensure our teams can train there and finding tyre marks on the playing surface was certainly not a welcome sight when one of our coaches was at the ground.

“If you fancy churning up the ground, think about the consequences of your actions; think of how much it will cost the club to repair the damage and think of our youth that needs somewhere to train.

“A little bit of common sense wouldn't go astray and we do appreciate that these are extraordinary times for us.”

However, there is some good news emerging from this story – the generosity of Golden Landscapes to repair the damage for free.

Soon after the club posted about its misfortune, Golden Landscapes, maintenance contractors for the pitch, got in touch offering to repair the damage to the pitch free of charge for Westport United.

They commented: “This is an unfortunate situation and we for one know how much work goes into maintaining the playing surface for the club. We also see the benefit of this grounds for both the youth and senior teams playing on them.”
