Funding boost for Mayo outdoor handball facility

Tuar Mhic Éadaigh Handball Club is to receive €5,000 funding under the Texaco Support for Sport initiative for its new outdoor facility.

Congratulating the club on its success, James Twohig, Director of Ireland Operations, Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited said: “The purpose of our initiative is to help clubs to overcome these obstacles so that they can continue to remain active and at the very heart of their local communities. This is why we believe our initiative has been so warmly welcomed by sports clubs nationwide in its launch year."

The Tuar Mhic Éadaigh Club was, after a lapse of several decades, reformed in 2018, re-igniting interest in what it terms ‘the wonderful traditional sport of handball’.

The €5,000 award made to the Tuar Mhic Éadaigh Club will be used to finance the purchase of materials required to build an outdoor one-wall ball court to serve the handballing community in the region.

Describing the club as 'a worthy winner which is respectful of our tradition and history’, Texaco Support for Sport ambassador and adjudicator, acclaimed broadcaster and former Irish rugby international Donncha O’Callaghan commented: "Their desire to create a place to play handball and socialise would benefit many people from Mayo and the surrounding region."
