Work can resume on erection of headstones in Mayo cemeteries

A Mayo elected representative has stated she has received confirmation that the erection of headstones is deemed as essential service and, as such, works can resume in Mayo cemeteries.

Councillor Annie May Reape explained: "The Department of An Taoiseach has said it is appropriate for the sector to facilitate the erection of headstones and associated works.

"In these traumatic times, I know this will bring solace to those who have been bereaved and that the clarification will be welcomed by monumental sculptors."

The halting of these works during lockdown had caused a great deal of upset and anger.

In a statement, Mayo TD Dara Calleary said: “In recent weeks I have been working with locally based monumental sculptors in Mayo to have their work deemed essential under Level 5 restrictions.

"There appeared to be an anomaly in the interpretation of the guidelines.

"I have placed a number of parliamentary questions and through that work clarification has been issued stating that works in burial grounds is in fact deemed essential under all levels of the business continuity framework.

"I am very pleased to bring clarity for our monumental sculptors but also for grieving families who can now proceed to have headstones erected in memory of their loved ones.”
