Work sought on Mayo town centre crossing after trailer unhitched

A RAISED crossing in the centre of Westport town needs to be addressed after a trailer unhitched due to the gradient.

There are two issues in the area - a 'bump' on Castlebar Street approaching Grady's which causes a noise nuisance for local residents.

And when you turn right towards the Newport Road lights, the crossing is too steep.

Councillor John O'Malley explained how pulling a trailer, the load goes to the back, and it and the towing vehicle ended up on two different levels, putting pressure on the ball hitch holding it on.

The crossing is too steep, he said, explaining how an incident happened where a trailer came off, though the driver was using a safety chain.

Councillor O'Malley asked that the matter be looked at.
