Green light for upgrade of Achill village's wastewater treatment plant

The village of Dugort on Achill Island is one of 21 additional wastewater treatment plants that have been selected for upgrade as part of Irish Water’s Small Towns and Villages Growth Programme.

The news has been welcomed by Deputy Dara Calleary and Deputy Michael Ring.

“This is very welcome news for the community of Dugort and forms part of Irish Water’s commitment to supporting growth and development in local towns and villages throughout the country, while protecting the environment and safeguarding water supplies,” said Deputy Calleary.

“Working in partnership with Mayo County Council, this investment in the local wastewater infrastructure will provide additional capacity for the development of new homes in Dugort, while ensuring that wastewater continues to be treated to an appropriate standard.

"It is very welcome and I congratulate Irish Water, Mayo County Council and local Councillor Paul McNamara for their work in ensuring it’s inclusion.”

Stated Deputy Ring: “This investment for Dugort wastewater treatment plant will ensure that wastewater continues to be treated to an appropriate standard.

"This upgrade will improve treatment capacity in the Dugort area. A new wastewater treatment plant will be developed at a new site to provide additional capacity for growth in this area”.

“Dugort was selected following detailed consultation with Mayo County Council."
