Master plan needed for popular Mayo amenity area

The Belleek area of Ballina needs an overall master plan for future development, a meeting of Ballina Municipal District has been told.

“Look at what has been achieved at Lough Lannagh (Castlebar) with walks and cycle paths and everything,” said Councillor Michael Loftus at Ballina MD's October monthly meeting, adding that Belleek is the 'jewel in the crown' of north Mayo.

He made his comments as members considered a Part 8 planning report on two new developments in the area – the provision of footpaths and kerbs along the eastern side of Belleek Road (L-1120), from the gate lodge to the 50 km/h speed limit (including relocation of fencing and removal/replacement of tress as necessary to facilitate works), and the construction of a car park and pedestrian link to the existing off-road footpath network in Belleek (L-11205).

The new footpath and kerbs on Belleek Road would have the added effect of slowing traffic, explained the head of Ballina MD, Declan Turnbull.

The scheme was advertised, he added, and attracted one submission from Ballina Athletic Club. After consideration, senior planner John McMyler recommended proceeding with the project.

Mr. Turnbull said that if the go-ahead is given, they will have to source funding for the work.

While Councillor Seamus Weir expressed concern about going ahead with something they do not have funding for at this stage, Councillor John O'Hara proposed the scheme, saying: “There are a lot of people going to Belleek. Why not make it as safe as we can? It's great to have a shovel-ready project there.”

Seconding, Councillor Loftus said this type of project would enhance Belleek and he called for an overall plan for the whole area for future projects at the location.

In support, Councillor Mark Duffy said Belleek is a brilliant amenity for all the community and this is a positive development in the area.

It would be great to have some bicycle parking included in the car park, and every measure should be taken to protect the mature trees there, he added.

Mr. Turnbull said they could look at bicycle parking in the car park area, and explained that any trees that have to be removed will be replaced.

The cathaoirleach of Ballina MD, Councillor Annie May Reape, concluded that she was happy with the proposal.
