Film inspired by the Cervical Check scandal showing in Mayo cinema

Set against the backdrop of the Cervical Check scandal that rocked Ireland, The Letters – opening in Mayo Movie World, Castlebar, this evening (Friday) – tells the story of three women from different walks of life who have been given mere weeks to live due to the false results of their cervical cancer checks.

Mary is a woman in her 50s who is the sole carer of her elderly mum with late stage Alzheimer's, Sam is a single mother in debt and struggling to raise her four kids, and Cliona a single career-driven woman who rates low on the autism spectrum that results in anxiety and social awkwardness.

This stunning film draws inspiration from Goddard, Fellini, Scorsese, Loach, Meadows and Wheatley, to name a few, with some of the more artistic shots within the film pay homage to Edgar Degas, Jacques-Louis David and Renoit.

The subject matter is inspired by true events happening in Ireland due to the Cervical Check cancer scandal.

The Letters is screening from this evening at Mayo Movie World. For more information or to book tickets, telephone (094) 9027777 or email movieworldmayo@gmail.com.
