CCTV at attack scene in Mayo town wasn't working

CCTV that it not working along the greenway in Westport, where an attack took place at the weekend, has been branded a 'terrible disgrace'.

Councillor Christy Hyland said he asked about the camera at the MUGA play area along the greenway a number of months ago but was told there was no money to repair it.

A person was attacked on the greenway, and gardaí are dealing with it, he explained at the annual budget meeting of Mayo County Council yesterday.

He wanted money set aside for the CCTV systems in the county so they wouldn't have another situation like this. Funding was needed to maintain them, he said.

The 18-camera system in Westport town itself is checked regularly and is working, he added.

Cathaoirleach Councillor Michael Smyth said the chief executive would review it, noting it is something that needs to be addressed long-term at municipal district level.
