Investor acquires derelict property on busy Mayo street

Moran Auctioneers has confirmed the sale of the former Durcan Solicitors property at Ellison Street in Castlebar.

The name of the purchaser is not being disclosed at this stage.

But it is understood the new owner of the building intends to bring new life to the derelict site.

The project could involve demolishing the property, such is its state of dereliction.

The proposal represents good news for a town centre street that has sadly fallen into decline in recent years with calls being issued for urgent action to be taken to address the situation.

There is growing speculation a significant proportion of the street will be redeveloped over the coming years.

Moran Auctioneers has also confirmed the sale of a second property at Ellison Street in the vicinity of Sports Direct.

The building is perhaps best known locally as Vincent Irwin's former butcher shop.

Meanwhile, new Indian and Mexican restaurants are expected to open at Main Street over the coming months.
