Eleven new homes proposed at Breaffy House Resort

AN 11-unit housing scheme is being proposed on lands at Breaffy House Resort in Castlebar.

Tirawley Ltd. have lodged an application for planning permission for the homes.

Proposed is the construction of 11 two-storey detached dwellings (including one single storey detached domestic garage), with pedestrian and vehicular access to Breaffy Road via the existing Breaffy House Resort access network.

Documentation submitted to Mayo County Council says the housing scheme is part of a masterplan for the development and expansion of the resort.

The dwellings will be permanent private homes, and the masterplan envisages further housing development on adjacent lands, which would be subject to a separate and future planning application.

The development would result in the delivery of a benefit to the village and hinterland, providing much needed housing on underutilised serviced land, providing a viable and attractive alternative to one-off housing which is the prevailing form of development in the Breaffy area.

Since its purchase, the owners of Breaffy House Resort have invested considerable sums in renovating and expanding the offer at the site, employing an average of 150 staff.

Their mission is to maximise usage of the existing 80-acre Breaffy estate for the benefit of all stakeholders by developing a sustainable community for generations to come.

Some concerns have been raised on social media in regard to the proposal and the need to preserve wildlife habitat at Breaffy Demesne.

Fears have also been expressed the proposal would compound existing traffic problems in Breaffy village.
