Investment in upgrade of Achill playground confirmed

A sum of €15,852 has been confirmed for upgrade works at the community playground in Keel on Achill island.

The announcement was made by the government which is providing funding to local authorities across the country for the refurbishment and development of playgrounds and play areas.

Welcoming the news, Senator Lisa Chambers commented: “Children’s playgrounds and play areas should be places of fun and activity for all children to enjoy, so that every child can experience the joy and excitement that comes with playing outdoors.

“By ensuring that our playgrounds include play equipment that is accessible and encourages inclusion, this funding boost will expand opportunities for play that will benefit every child.

"I am delighted to see Keel being named as one of this year’s successful projects, the funding will enhance their play facilities so that children of all abilities can express themselves in a safe environment and know that they belong.”

The projects is funded by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY) encompass a wide range of initiatives that will deliver diverse benefits to children and young people and have a positive impact on communities.

These projects include:

• Inclusive basket swing seat

• Wheelchair accessible swing

• Sensory Equipment

• Natural Play Areas

• Accessibility/Biodiversity Playground upgrade(s)

• Learn to cycle track

• Inclusive carousel

The announcement has also been welcomed by Deputy Alan Dillon and Deputy Michael Ring.

Deputy Dillon said: “I have been working with the local community in Achill to ensure these upgrade works are completed before the busy summer season in Achill.

"It is great to see funding of over €15,800 being allocated for upgrade works. I expect the necessary works are completed as soon as possible and especially before the summer.”

Deputy Ring stated: “I am pleased that funding has been allocated to upgrade the playground in Keel as this an essential facility for local children and for the high number of tourist families and children visiting Achill, particularly during the summer months."
