€115,707 for three Mayo projects under Community Monuments Fund

FUNDING of €115,707 has been announced for three Mayo projects under the Community Monuments Fund.

They are:

· Kilteany Church, Bangor - €55,000

· Kilgeever Church, Louisburgh - €48,672

· Ballyheane Church and Graveyard €12,035

Welcoming the funding, Deputy Alan Dillon said: “It is great to see essential capital funding being provided to our valuable archaeological heritage which helps owners and custodians of archaeological monuments to safeguard them into the future for the benefit of communities and the public.”

Deputy Michael Ring said: “The core objective of the Community Monuments Fund is to support the conservation, maintenance, protection and promotion of local monuments and historic sites.

“I am pleased that this funding will go towards protecting Mayo’s important archaeological heritage for future years.”

Castlebar Councillor Ger Deere welcomed the funding for Ballyheane Church and graveyard of just over €12,000.

“The hard working committee in Ballyheane have carried out significant work at the cemetery and this funding will help them continue to support the conservation and maintenance of this historic site,” he said.
