Mayo athletic club strike gold at children’s games

THE young athletes of Westport Athletic Club from Under 9 to Under 11 enjoyed much success at the Mayo County Children’s Games held in Claremorris last week.

A huge thank you to all the children, coaches and parents involved. A special mention to the parent who came to help us even though their children weren't running and other who swept the long jump pit run up and the jack of all trades.

A very special thank you to Lisa Clarken who coordinated the whole day and all those who supported her.

Every athlete did extremely well and made the club very proud.

Some highlights of the day for Westport include Johnny Clarken’s gold in the Under 9 long jump, Luke Madigan’s silver in the Under 9 300m, Aoife Renton’s bronze in the Under 9 long jump, Finn Duckett’s bronze in the Under 10 long jump and bronze in the Under 10 boys relay, with the team including Finn Duckett, Sean Óg Ó Ruain, Jack Malone and Fionn Kelly.

The team events yielded many medals also. Among the winner were Johnny Clarken and Luke Madigan (Under 9 300m, gold), Johnny Clarken and Marcin Reidy (Under 9 long jump, gold), Finn Duckett and Jack Malne (Under 10 long jump, bronze), Daire Ryan and Aodhhan Ó Ruain (Under 9 long jump, bronze), and Aoife Renton and Lola Whittaker (Under 9 long jump, bronze).
