Appeal to Housing Agency over Mayo's shocking rent hikes

A fresh demand has been made for the Housing Agency to urgently review analysis which are preventing the roll-out of rent pressures zones in Mayo.

Deputy Rose Conway-Walsh said it is shocking local landlords are increasing rents by as much as 70% across the county – but the agency’s criteria for designation, based on a rent index published by the Residential Tenancies Board, does not reflect these cases.

The agency is adamant rents being charged in Mayo urban centres does not exceed a rise of seven per cent during four of the past six quarters dating back to February 2021.

The nearest to achieving designation is Westport with a rating of 96.3, just 3.7 point short of the designation target of 100.

It was revealed in recent days that a family in the town had its monthly rent increased by €700, from €970 to €1,670, leaving them facing the prospect of homelessness.

Stated Deputy Conway-Walsh: “Over the last two years I have repeatedly raised the need to expand rent pressure zones to Mayo, particularly in Westport.

“Now we have a family facing a 70% rent increase. The minister can no longer turn a blind eye to the housing crisis in Mayo.

"We need immediate action to address the situation and protect this family and others being crucified by skyrocketing rents.

“Mayo tenants need to be given the protections that come along with designation of a rent pressure zone.

“There is no rationale for the obstacles being put in people’s way and I want to see swift action on this matter by the minister.”
