Semi-finalists start to emerge in Mayo GAA football championships

Westport are the first team through to the semi-finals of the Connacht Gold Mayo SFC thanks to a hard-fought win over Garrymore in Ballinrobe this evening.

There were just two points between the sides in the end (0-13 to 0-11) as Westport held off a late surge from Garrymore despite losing to men to red cards.

The other three semi-finals in the senior championship (Ballina v Claremorris, Breaffy v Ballintubber and Castlebar v Knockmore) will be played tomorrow afternoon.

At the other extreme, former Mayo star Andy Moran signed off on his career with his club, Ballaghaderreen, by scoring 3-3 to help them defeat Davitts (6-8 to 2-8), ensuring their survival at senior level.

The other senior relegation playoff between The Neale and Balla will be played in Tourmakeady tomorrow.

There was just one Egan Jewellers Mayo IFC quarterfinal this afternoon, and it turned out to be an entertaining encounter between Ballyhaunis and Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin in Clogher.

In the end the east Mayo club won out by five points, 1-16 to 1-11, to advance to their third intermediate championship semi-final in four years.

Parke made things interesting late on through a goal by Aaron Moran in the 47th minute but it would be their final score of the match as Ballyhaunis hit six without reply to go through to the last four once again.

The two intermediate relegation playoffs were played this evening, and it's Kilmaine and Kiltane who survive as they beat Lahardane and Ardnaree respectively.

The remaining intermediate quartersfinals (Ballinrobe v Kilmeena, Louisburgh v Moy Davitts, Hollymount/Carramore v Crossmolina) will be played tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the four TF Royal Hotel JFC A semi-finalists are known following today's last eight encounters. The four to win through were Cill Chomáin, Islandeady, Shrule/Glencorrib and Killala.

The game between Killala and Swinford went to extra time before the north Mayo side won by two points (2-9 to 0-13).

Finally, Achill have reached the TF Royal Hotel JFC B semi-finals courtesy of a 1-12 to 0-5 victory over Kilmovee today. The games between Ballycastle and Lacken and Moygownagh and Kilfian will be played tomorrow, with Ballycroy already into the semis thanks to a bye.
