Down to the final four in Mayo GAA football championships

Knockmore's reign as Mayo senior club champions was ended by a youthful Castlebar Mitchels at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park this afternoon.

Back-to-back winners of the Connacht Gold Mayo SFC in 2020 and 2021, Knockmore were always playing catch up against Mitchels today and while they came with a late burst to leave them just a point behind in injury time, the county town side – for whom Ethan Gibbons kicked seven points – never panicked and held on to secure victory.

Later in the day, at the same venue, a Cillian O'Connor-inspired Ballintubber ended the championship aspirations of neighbours Breaffy, despite playing the majority of the second half with 14 men after Jason Gibbons was sent off.

O'Connor scored Ballintubber's first goal in the opening half and was involved in the second goal, scored by substitute Ciaran Gavin, at a time when it was badly needed. Breaffy got it back to two points in injury time but a late O'Connor free left three between them in the end (2-11 to 0-14).

Earlier today, in Charlestown, Ballina Stephenites had too much for 14-man Claremorris, winning out by 4-13 to 0-7 in the end. Evan Regan was in fine form and scored two of the goals, with the others coming from Dylan Thornton and Frank Irwin.

The semi-final draw pits Westport against Castlebar Mitchels and Ballintubber against Ballina Stephenites.

In the relegation playoff, Balla withstood a surge by The Neale to win by five, 2-10 to 1-8, and thus maintain their senior status. The Neale face Davitts in the relegation final.

Three of the four Egan Jewellers Mayo IFC quarterfinals were played today, with Bohola Moy Davitts, Kilmeena and Hollymount/Carramore all winning to join Ballyhaunis in the final four.

The semi-final draw sees Kilmeena face Bohola Moy Davitts and Hollymount/Carramore take on Ballyhaunis.

All four TF Royal Hotel JFC A quarterfinals were played yesterday but the semi-final draw was made this evening. Following that draw, the fixtures are: Killala v Cill Chomáin, Shrule/Glencorrib v Islandeady.

In the TF Royal Hotel JFC B quarterfinals played today, Ballycastle beat neighbours Lacken (3-12 to 0-5) while another north Mayo derby saw Moygownagh account for Kilfian (0-16 to 1-9). The semi-final pairings are: Ballycastle v Achill, Ballycroy v Moygownagh.
