Mayo GAA refused permission for rainbow-coloured numbers on jerseys

The GAA has refused an application by Mayo GAA to wear rainbow-coloured numbers on their jerseys.

Mayo sought permission from Croke Park to make the change for their 2023 National Football League games, according to a report in the Irish Independent.

The move was designed to be part of a show of support for the LGBTQ+ community and was the result of an approach from Mindspace Mayo – the county’s charity partner.

The report continued: "It is understood while the GAA is happy to consider supporting any campaign, and would be open to the idea of players wearing rainbow laces or armbands, it considers playing gear to be ‘sacrosanct’ and that it should not be interfered with."
