Mayo town's street CCTV system 'not fit for purpose' ahead of Biden visit

A member of the Mayo Joint Policing Committee has called for the street CCTV system in Ballina to be replaced ahead of the planned visit this summer by US President Joe Biden.

Councillor Michael Loftus said the existing system is not fit for purpose and will certainly not, in his view, meet the requirements of the White House security personnel.

He said Ballina Municipal District recently invested €30,000 on repairing the system - but he is still unsure how effective it is working.

Garda Superintendent Gary Walsh said approval is being sought to re-certify the system.
