Tributes to woman who died in Mayo road accident

Tributes are being paid to Anne Shannon, Dooagh, Achill, and formerly of Ballaghadereen and Lyon, France.

She died tragically from injuries sustained in a fatal road traffic collision which occurred last Friday evening in Achill.

The accident, which involved a car and van, took place on the R319, west of Achill Sound.

The deceased was a native of Ballaghaderreen but had been living at Dooagh, Achill, for the past 30 years, having previously resided in Lyon, France.

She was in her eighties.

A prolific and talented writer, Ann is described in online condolences as kind and generous, great company, with a telling eye for detail and gentle humour.

She was a regular contributor to the Sunday Miscellany series on RTÉ Radio One.

Anne was the beloved sister of Dawn and Ruth, and of the late Mary, Paddy, Mairead, Micheál and Una.

She was much loved sister-in law of Patrick, adored aunt, great-aunt, cousin and dear friend to many wherever she made her home over the years. She leaves many broken hearts behind her.

In a tribute to her, Councillor Paul McNamara said her tragic death evoked a tremendous sense of shock and sadness across a wide area.

"An affable and kind woman, she was a wonderful neighbour always willing to lend a helping hand," he stated.

The deceased was involved in a number of community voluntary organisations and was held in high regard.

Her remains leaving Lavelle's Funeral Home, Cashel, Achill on Monday morning next, April 3, at 10.30 a.m. to arrive St Patrick's Church, Pollagh, for Funeral Mass at 11 a.m.

Burial will take place afterwards in Slievemore Cemetery.

May her gentle soul rest in peace.
