A Service of Remembrance is to be held on Achill Island next week in memory of Finbar Cafferkey who was killed while serving with Ukrainian forces in the battle for Bakhmut last month.

The remains of the 45-year-old have not yet been recovered.

The remembrance ceremony is planned for the function room at what is known as Ted Lavelle’s pub, Cashel, Achill on Friday, May 12, at 6 p.m.

Finbar’s parents, Tom and Celine, originally owned the premises and he worked there as a younger man.

A brief notice issued by his family says “Finbar is sadly missed by his parents Tom and Celine, his brothers, Eamon and Colm, his sisters, Maeve and Orla, his relations and a wide network of friends.

“There will be a service of remembrance on Friday May 12, at 6 p.m. in Ted Lavelle's function room Cashel, Achill, followed by time to share condolences until 8.30 p.m.

“The funeral will take place in the coming months when Finbar's remains have been recovered and repatriated," the death notice, which gives the date of death as April 19, concluded.
