Large part of north Mayo hit with internet outage

A LARGE part of north Mayo was struck with an internet outage yesterday (Wednesday) evening.

Seven hours into the outage, Councillor Gerry Coyle took to social media where he branded it 'an absolute disgrace'.

Councillor Coyle explained: “The internet is off all over Erris since 4.30 p.m. this evening. While people might view internet as a luxury, it is a necessity in this day and age, and it’s an absolute disgrace that it’s down for this length of time again.

“It’s not fair on the people who suffer when it’s down. Shops, restaurants, B&Bs and other vital businesses in our community are not able to do business. There’s no ATM working for people to access their own money, which is ludicrous.”

He continued: “We want to encourage people to live in rural Ireland and work from home or from our fantastic Gteic centres and then they are constantly faced with this obstacle.

“I’m also thinking of anyone doing their Leaving Certificate or Junior Certificate that were affected by this evening's outage and take this opportunity to wish them all well with the remainder of the exams.

“There’s no excuse for an outage of this length on a regular basis, we deserve a better service.

“I will be reaching out to the Minister for Communications to raise this issue and to seek answers.”
