Multi-million-euro tender on old Mayo post office to be approved

The redevelopment of the old post office in Castlebar is set to move forward, as a multimillion-euro construction tender is expected to be approved this week.

The project, a key initiative under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF), aims to transform the disused building into a community youth resource centre.

Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, Alan Dillon TD, confirmed the news this morning. The redevelopment is being spearheaded by Mayo County Council, with Minister Dillon playing a central role in advocating for investment in the town since his election in February 2020.

Speaking on the announcement, Minister Dillon expressed his excitement about the project's progress.

“After productive discussions within my department, I’m delighted that we’re now at the stage where we can proceed to awarding the tender. All documents have been approved, and we expect to receive final approval in the coming days,” said Dillon, a former Mayo GAA star.

Highlighting the need for new facilities for young people in Castlebar, he added: “This is an important project for the town. We urgently need more resources for our youth, and I’m thrilled to see the old post office being repurposed into something that will benefit the community for years to come.”
