Tributes paid on passing of beloved Mayo priest

THE Tuam Archdiocese is mourning the death of Fr. Paddy Gill, a dedicated and much loved priest.

Aged in his 98th year, he ministered full time in Lecanvey, Westport, until the age of 93.

After a lifetime of dedicated service to the church and community, he was remembered in prayers at Mass in St. Mary's Church, Westport, this morning.

In a tribute, Fr. John Kenny said: “His priestly ministry touched the lives of many with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith. Fr. Paddy dedicated his life to serving in our diocese and community. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.

“A good and faithful servant, may he rest in peace.”

The Tuam Archdiocese also paid tribute: “In your prayers, please remember our beloved brother Fr. Paddy Gill who has passed away in his 98th year, his 72nd year of priesthood. He ministered full time in Lecanvey until the age of 93.

“Fr. Paddy was greatly and deeply loved by his people, he had a broad mind and big heart.

“In the 1950s, as a teacher in St. Jarlaths College, as a proud Mayo man, he acted as a scout for Mayo football as several boarders came from the Mayo end of the diocese.

“He took early retirement as a Parish Priest in Milltown to come back to minister to his own people in the foothills of Croagh Patrick and be close to his family whom he so dearly loved.

“This picture was taken on the occasion of Fr. Paddy's 70th anniversary as a priest. Solas na bhFlaitheas i measc na Naomh.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
