Catch The Last Witch: Bridget Cleary at the Linenhall Arts Centre this November.

Fearless stories and fierce sounds at Mayo arts centre

A diversely exciting programme of events is being presented by the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, this autumn, featuring powerful theatre, daring storytelling and memorable music.

Among those offerings is The Last Witch: Bridget Cleary, written and performed by Eve O’Mahony, on Tuesday, November 11.

This gripping solo performance delves into the life and mysterious death of Bridget Cleary, an independent woman accused of being a changeling in 1895 Ireland. Fusing history, folklore, and psychological insight, themes of female agency, superstition and societal fear are explored.

Originally developed under the mentorship of Mikel Murfi (The Man in the Woman’s Shoes, I Hear You and Rejoice), this haunting retelling resonates powerfully with modern audiences.

An accomplished actress, writer and producer, known for compelling performances and historical storytelling, Eve O’Mahony’s career spans theatre and television. Always bringing emotional depth and authenticity to complex characters, in The Last Witch: Bridget Cleary she examines enduring issues of gender roles and belief systems through a vivid, immersive narrative.

A rich theatrical experience for anyone interested in drama, cultural heritage, and the intersection of myth and reality, awaits.

THE SPANKING GODDESS AND OTHER DISCARDED TALES

Lauded Irish storyteller Clare Murphy takes to the stage for The Spanking Goddess and Other Discarded Tales on Wednesday, September 24.

This daring, adult-only storytelling performance dives deep into the forgotten myths of the Celts, featuring fierce goddesses, wild warriors, and taboo-breaking tales rarely told. With her trademark wit and power, these women of myth left in the shadows are resurrected.

“Clare is an astounding storyteller,” enthused Blindboy. Expect unorthodox sex, goddess battles, and raw archetypes brought vividly to life.

Not for the faint-hearted, and definitely not for children.
