Young people in Mayo among focus as YFG launches rural challenges survey

Young Fine Gael has launched a nationwide survey aimed at giving young people in rural communities a stronger voice in shaping future policy.

The survey, titled Towards a Better Future for Young People in Rural Ireland, seeks to gather the experiences, concerns, and priorities of young people living in towns, villages, and farming communities across the country.

The findings will directly inform YFG’s next policy document, which will be presented to Fine Gael and Government representatives.

YFG President Jamie Malone said the goal is to ensure that the realities of rural living are fully reflected in national policy.

“We want to make sure rural voices are heard,” he said. “Young people in rural Ireland are ambitious and deeply connected to their communities, but they face unique challenges.

Whether it’s the cost of farming inputs, access to broadband, public transport, or opportunities to stay and work locally, we want to hear about it. This survey is your chance to make your voice count.”

A particular focus of the initiative is the agri-food sector, with YFG encouraging young farmers, apprentices, and those working in rural industries to share their insights.

Dean Kenny, YFG Director of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said young farmers are under significant strain.

“Young farmers are facing real pressures, from rising costs and overwhelming paperwork for grants to uncertainty around CAP supports and the future of family farms,” he said.

“Their insights are essential if we’re to build fair, practical policies that support rural livelihoods, encourage ambition, and help young people stay rooted in their communities.”

The survey takes only a few minutes to complete and is available through YFG’s social media channels.

Malone said the input gathered will help influence future legislation and development priorities.

“Politics works best when it listens,” he added. “We want every young person from the heart of Dublin to the hills of Donegal to have a voice in shaping Ireland’s future.”
