€50,000 in grants approved for animal welfare work in Mayo
ANIMAL welfare grants totalling €50,000, for five organisations, have been approved by Mayo County Council's environment and climate change committee.
The allocations are: Ainmhithe €1,000; Hungry Horse Outside €2,000; Madra €4,000; Mayo SPCA €18,500; and North West SPCA €24,500.
The recommendations will now come before a full meeting of Mayo County Council.
Hungry Horse Outside impound stray horses for the council and aid with the transport of dogs for some rescues in Mayo.
Madra assist in rehoming dogs from the county pound. This year they updated their intake kennels and have plans to update and renovate kitchen facilities for more efficient feeding, storage and workspace.
Ainmhithe rescue, rehabilitate and rehome a large number of collies from Mayo and the dog pound, and carried out improvements to their premises over the last year.
Mayo SPCA rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned and neglected animals, rehoming dogs from the pound and also running a trap, neuter and release programme for feral cats. The group also facilitates education opportunities for groups.
North West SPCA are also involved similar work, with rehoming and a neutering programme, in addition to participating in a microchipping day.
