Winter 'flu surge putting extra pressure on Mayo hospital

Up to 25 patients are left without beds at Mayo University Hospital today.

A total of 13 are being accommodated on trolleys and chairs in the emergency department while 12 are in wards elsewhere.

Nationally, 635 admitted patients are waiting for beds, according to today’s INMO Trolley Watch.

Of those, 442 patients are waiting in the emergency department, while 193 are in wards elsewhere in the hospital.

The situation is attributed to a surge in winter influenza cases.
