Safety concern about proposed Mayo school right turning lane
A right-turning lane for Balla Secondary School isn't meeting with a positive response from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
This, and a pedestrian crossing, are on the local wish list to improve road safety.
The pedestrian crossing is being looked at, with nothing set in stone, but it is being reviewed, noted Councillor Donna Sheridan in an update. While concern was raised about the turning lane, she added.
Councillor Sheridan commented on the 'chaos' at school times in Balla, and all they were looking for was a right-turning lane for the school.
She asked they write back to TII to let them know they are 'unhappy' with what they're being told.
Municipal head David Mellett said TII have concerns about the right-turning lane from the Castlebar approach as it would involve removing part of the footpath on both sides, and pedestrians would have to cross a wider street, with a middle island required.
There was a safety concern with a truck coming from Castlebar stopping to let a pedestrian across, with someone in the other lane not necessarily seeing them, creating a hazard.
The decision was taken due to the impact on safety.
The matter can be brought back to TII but he didn't think they will change their position from a health and safety point of view.
Separately, Councillor Sheridan said safety issues at Balla National School have been raised with her.
Bollards are needed and she asked the municipal district to talk to the school to see what can be done.
