Toy Story 5 star Tim Allen said he thought the popular film franchise would end after its third instalment.

The 72-year-old actor plays action figure toy Buzz Lightyear in the award-winning animated film series, which follows the adventures of a group of toys.

The fifth film in the franchise sees Allen’s space ranger doll reunite with Tom Hanks’ character – a pull-string cowboy doll named Woody – after he chose to leave the gang to become a “lost toy” in Toy Story 4.

Speaking to Radio Times, Allen reflected on the reunion between the characters as well as the longevity of the franchise, which first began in 1995.

Allen said: “I thought (Toy Story 3) was the end of it.

Reflecting on the reunion between his and Hanks’ characters, he added: “I love script and I love storytelling, and I sometimes ask questions.

“I said (to the filmmakers) that I had such a hard time saying goodbye to this man in (Toy Story 4) that you’ve got to have a moment where they connect and Buzz sees that he’s back.

“That moment is simple and short, but it happens.”

His co-star Hanks, known for movies including Forrest Gump (1994) and Cast Away (2000), told the magazine: “We’ve had more than one moment where we were in a recording studio and we were undone emotionally and had tearful drives home.”

Allen and Hanks have starred in the Toy Story franchise alongside Joan Cusack for almost three decades, and in the films the toys have taken on threats such as an evil strawberry-scented bear and vintage doll Gabby Gabby.

In the latest film the group of toys take on technology and electronic devices, after they become discarded when their owner Bonnie gets a smart tablet called Lilypad (Greta Lee).

It was also recently announced that pop star Taylor Swift wrote an original song for the upcoming film titled I Knew It, I Knew You.

The award-winning singer revealed the news in a post to Instagram earlier in June, and said she always “dreamed” of writing for the beloved Disney and Pixar film animation.

Toy Story 5 will be in cinemas from June 19th.
