Nimmo aims to climb rally championship ladder

THE next chapter in the rally apprenticeship of Gordon Nimmo sees the Mayo man take the Supermacs Castlebar Fiesta to Sligo for the next round of the Triton National Rally Championship.

After another successful finish in the Stonethrowers Rally in Clonmel, Tipperary, a few weeks ago, his record reads three out of three so far this year, and with three more rounds to come, the consistency means he is up to fourth in championship for his class.

Said Gordon: "The car and myself might not be the quickest out there, but as an old rallying saying goes - To win, you have to finish. Confidence is building and with Chrystal Culkeen back in the navigator seat again, this can only help the improvement more."

Following Sligo, and all going well, it's a quick break and off to the Clare Stages in Ennis a few weeks later, with the final round in October in Donegal.

Gordon continued: "I’d love to go the full season with the new car and finish all events, but over confidence can lead to mistakes, so I’m building up slowly and learning different characteristics of rallying in general. "

It’s also been busy off the stages too, with planning already started for next year, where he hopes to build up his motorsport team into a group of motorsport individuals.

These will be local people who participate in various disciplines, where they can share their experience and equipment to help better their performances collectively.

"It’s an overlooked sport is motorsport for funding, but we have some of the best talent in the world at our doorsteps but there are no facilities here in the west and funding is only gained through great companies and supporters, like my main sponsors, Supermacs Castlebar, in helping us out to show our sport to the public," he explained. Hopefully he can offer an appealing package to sponsors, where companies will get advertising, not just on the rally stages but on tracks, roads and even in different countries.

As many will have seen on social media, the Westmotorsport team likes to give back too, and recently local girl Ana Feeney was a lucky winner in the Supermacs Castlebar Facebook page competition where she won a team jacket and hat.

We wish him well in Sligo and hope he can climb the up the championship ladder even higher.
