Fontaines DC, with two Mayo members, nominated for Grammy

IRISH band Fontaines DC have been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album with 'A Hero’s Death'.

The nomination is being celebrated in Mayo where two of the band members hail from.

Drummer Tom Coll is from Crimlin, outside Castlebar, and Conor Deegan (bass guitar) is also from Castlebar.

The five-member group have been enjoying great success - their debut album, ‘Dogrel’, released in April of last year on Partisan Records, was voted one of the best albums of 2019.

'A Hero's Death' is their second album and was just pipped to the number one spot in the official British Album Charts Top 100 earlier this year.

The band got their name from a character in the movie ‘The Godfather’ called Johnny Fontane, a singer and movie star portrayed by Al Martino. Fontane was godson of Vito Corleone.

They added the initials ‘DC' when a band in Los Angeles had the same name. The initials ‘DC’ stand for ‘Dublin City'.

The band members met in Dublin while attending music college at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM).

Tom is son of Shelia and the late John Coll, a director of services with Mayo County Council, while Conor is son of Mark and Elizabeth Deegan.

The 63rd Grammy Awards will take place on January 31 next.
