Passing of member of widely respected Mayo business family

THE death has taken place of Ita Staunton (née Casey), 2 Brooklands Close, and Main Street, Castlebar.

A member of one of Mayo's best known and most respected business families, news of her passing is widely mourned in the community at large.

She is deeply regretted by her loving family - Peter (Dublin), Mary (McHugh), John (Galway), Ita, Jimmy, Pat, Pauline (Forde, Galway), Joan (Rowland), Anne (Barrett), sons-in-law Noel (Forde), Paul (Rowland) and Noel (Barrett), daughters-in-law Madeline, Helen, Marita and Anne, sisters-in-law Sue (Casey, Castlebar), Breege (Staunton, Louisburgh) and Tess (Casey, Roscommon), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends, to whom deepest sympathy is tendered.

A native of Roscommon, she was predeceased by her husband Jack and son Tommy.

Ita was an integral part of Castlebar's retail sector for many years, her gift shop at Main Street being a magnet for shoppers from throughout the region as it specialised in Waterford Glass and other exclusive giftware.

Despite her busy working life, she was involved in a number of local voluntary organisations, including Castlebar Golf Club, Castlebar Soroptimists and Castlebar International Four Days Walks.

A fluent Irish language speaker, she was also associated with Gnó Mhaigh Eo.

Her remains will be reposing at her residence tomorrow (Thursday) from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Removal takes place on Friday morning at 10 a.m. to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, for Requiem Mass at 11 a.m. Burial takes afterwards in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.
