Fresh call for end to Mayo running track dispute

A MAYO elected representative has expressed concern that the authority is being 'strung along' by one party in the dispute over use of the running track in Belleek in Ballina.

Mediation is ongoing between Ballina Athletic Club, which has an agreement with Mayo County Council covering management of the facility, and Moy Valley Athletic Club, which is not currently using the track.

However, Councillor Michael Loftus said he felt one particular group was being 'very smart' in the way it was dealing with the matter and he suggested a time limit should be put on the mediation process.

“The people of Ballina need this sorted out,” he said at a Ballina MD meeting. “I'm not saying one club is right and one club is wrong but I am saying that we, as a council, should look at this as a community facility that should be available to everyone.”

Tom Gilligan, director of services, said he had met representatives from both clubs separately and had further meetings scheduled for next week. He was conscious of the time factor and the need to bring it to – hopefully – a satisfactory conclusion.

He thanked both groups for their involvement in the process so far and said he wanted to ensure the matter is brought to a conclusion as quickly as possible.
