Call for speed limit increase on two roads

MEMBERS of Claremorris Municipal District have called for two roads, Kiltimagh to Bohola and Claremorris to Ballinrobe, to have their speed limits raised from 80 to 100 kph.

Councillor John Caulfield said the Kiltimagh to Bohola Road needed to have its speed limit upgraded from 80 to 100 km.

Stated Councillor Caulfield: "Over the years a lot of money has been poured into the Kiltimagh to Bohola Road. As a result of this it is a fine road - indeed, much of it is like an airport runway.

"It is also the main road between Kiltimagh and Castlebar and Ballina.

"I feel the speed limit needs to be upgraded from 80 to 100 km."

Councillor Richard Finn, agreeing with Councillor Caulfield about raising the speed limit on this road, also said that the speed limit on the Claremorris to Ballinrobe road needed to be upgraded from 80 to 100 kph as well.

"It is all well having speed limits and putting things in place to reduce carnage on the roads. But we saw in January that despite this they were 16 people killed on the Irish roads.

"As well as the need to upgrade the speed limit on the Kiltimagh to Bohola Road from 80 to 100 km, the speed limit on the Claremorris to Ballinrobe Road also needs to be upped from 80 to 100 km," said Councillor Finn.

Padraic Flanagan, senior executive officer, told the meeting that both roads were regional roads and that the speed limit on these was 80 km.

However, he said he would these raise the speed issue on these two roads with the authorities.
