2021 start date for Newport Sewerage Scheme

CONSTRUCTION of the new Newport Sewerage Scheme is scheduled to start in 2021.

An update circulated to local councillors sets out that a new waste water treatment plant for Newport is a high priority for Irish Water and Mayo County Council and is included on the current investment plan as it is classified as having 'no treatment' by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

A feasibility study report for the project will shortly be completed which will identify the scope and a preferred site for the project.

Detailed design, planning, environmental surveys, land acquisition, site investigation surveys and procurement will commence in Q2 2019.

This will continue for up to two years and construction is scheduled to commence in 2021, subject to successful planning approval and land acquisition.

Construction duration will be up to two years.

Local Councillor Tereasa McGuire welcomed the news this morning, saying the scheme would be a great boost for the town and Clew Bay.

Councillor Brendan Mulroy has also expressed his delight that work is progressing as planned.

This will be a brilliant addition to Newport and allows it to prosper into the future,” he said.
