GMIT Mayo business programme nominated for excellence award

THE Bachelor of Business (Hons) programme (GA886) in GMIT Mayo has been shortlisted for a prestigious award in the Excellence in Education category in this year’s national Irish Accountancy Awards.

This programme of study can lead to two awards - one in accountancy and one in business. It is designed on the principle of a broad based education moving towards an element of specialisation in third year and broadening out again in the final year.

The awards ceremony, which takes place in Dublin’s Mansion House on May 16, is attended by hundreds of leading industry figures. GMIT will be represented by Michael Gill, Head of the GMIT Department of Business, Humanities and Technology, and programme chair and lecturer Caroline Clarke.

The four-year degree programme in GMIT Mayo offers students a broad-based, inter-disciplinary business education which prepares them for the workplace and a successful career in business. In the first year, students study, accounting, economics, ICT, law, management, marketing, mathematics and statistics. At the end of first year they have a choice of selecting the accounting pathway and can go on to study the Bachelor of Business in Accounting (Hons) degree.

Said Michael Gill, Head of Dept.: “The accounting and business team are delighted that the programme has been shortlisted in this national competition under Excellence in Education and Training. We are very aware how well our graduates do once they complete this programme, with many going on to senior positions in industry after pursuing postgraduate opportunities. Indeed, our graduates keep us informed of their career developments and continually outline how well prepared they are when they leave the Mayo campus of GMIT with this qualification.

It is a great achievement to be in the last seven in Ireland in this category and we are really proud of that.”

The annual Irish Accountancy Awards receive entries from firms and individuals all over Ireland who provide the highest quality of service and can demonstrate they have added significant value and competitive advantage to their organisations.
